Navy Personnel Release 57 Sea Turtle Hatchlings into the West Philippine Sea

In a vital display of environmental stewardship alongside territorial defense, personnel from the Joint Task Unit Pag-asa (JTUP) released 57 sea turtle hatchlings into the West Philippine Sea on Monday, May 18. The unit, which operates under the Western Naval Command (WesNavCom), is stationed on Pag-asa Island, where the hatchlings were originally discovered along the shores.

According to military officials, the hatchlings were temporarily held in protective custody for nearly two months. This period of monitoring by JTUP operatives was crucial for safeguarding the young turtles during their most vulnerable stage of development, protecting them from natural predators and harsh coastal conditions before their return to the ocean.

While the primary mission of the deployed forces remains the defense of the country's maritime security in the West Philippine Sea, WesNavCom emphasized that ecological preservation is a key component of their presence in the region. The successful release highlights the dual responsibility embraced by the armed forces in protecting both national sovereignty and marine biodiversity.
